Our Love Story:The Children's Book Version

Today I am doing something a little different and am sharing a personal story. I don't often do that on this blog (I do that on my other one!). But, because it is Valentine's Day, I am joining in on the fun at Keeping Up With the Cantelmo's and sharing the love story of Me and my husband, Jeff.

I was going to write out a new version just for this post, but then I decided it would be much more fun to share the following version with you. When Jeff and I got married two years ago, we gave each other gifts the night before our wedding. He gave me this beautiful box in which to keep love letters he writes to me (because he knows that "Words of Affirmation" are my "Love Language").

I gave him a children's book that I wrote and made about our story. I did this because Jeff always says I need to write a children's book (mostly because I am a huge kid at heart. :-)) Now, that we are having our first child, I can read it to her someday (and also test if she's completely bored by it-haha). So, here it is-complete with photos. But, seriously, please don't judge my children's book writing skills on this one! I was trying to fit in details not needed for a children's book-and also fit the text into a Shutterfly book.

Not Too Full

A True Love Story

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Jeff. He liked to play sports, watch TV, and play outside with his little brother. One day, he decided it was a good idea to back his mom's car out of the driveway. He crashed it into a ditch.

He was very happy, but something was missing...

Many miles away, there lived a little girl named April. She also liked playing outside, but really liked playing make-believe with her sister and writing plays and performing them for her family. They usually starred the family puppy, Heidi, much to the cute little puppy's dismay.

April was also very happy, but something was missing...

When April was 14, she discovered the greatest Truth that ever existed in the whole universe. She realized the Almighty God of the universe is loving, patient and good-not a big, mean king who was ready to zap her at any moment when she did something bad. She discovered that she did not have to earn God's favor by being good, but that God loved her even when she was naughty.

She learned that because God's Son, Jesus, died for her on the cross and then rose from the dead, God would forgive her when she was naughty and she could have a lasting friendship with God. And so she believed and her heart was finally full...but not too full...

The little boy named Jeff grew and grew into a young man. He left home and joined the Wolfpack, so he could learn how to be an engineer, make lots of money, and have a big house.

Then one day a friend told him something that would change his life and dreams forever. It was the same great Truth April learned-that God loved him and would forgive him if he believed in God's powerful Son, Jesus. Jeff knew he needed Jesus and wanted to have a lasting friendship with God, so he believed.

And his heart was finally full...but not too full...

As Jeff talked and spent time with his friend, Jesus, his dreams began to change. Making lots of money and having a big house were not so important anymore. God gave him new and bigger dreams. Jeff found that he cared about people who didn't know Jesus, like he once didn't know Jesus. God made Jeff care more about His glory than about having a big house. So, when God asked Jeff to spend his life making little money telling people about Jesus, Jeff agreed.

And his heart was full...but not too full...

The little girl named April grew and grew into a young woman. She joined the Mountaineers so she could learn how to write stories about people so that other people could read them and be inspired. It was a good goal, but as she talked with her friend, Jesus, her dreams began to change. God burdened her heart for people who didn't know Him, like she once didn't know Him. God made her care more about His glory than being admired for her talents. So, when God asked her to spend her life telling people about Jesus, she agreed-even when He asked her to go to the ends of the earth (though it took some convincing!)

And her heart was full...but not too full...

Jeff was never alone. God always kept His promise to be with Jeff always. He also have Jeff many good friends and family to keep him company.

Jeff was not alone, but he wanted something-something he could not receive from his friends and family. He wasn't quite sure what that was. His heart was full...but not too full...

April was also never alone. God is faithful and kept His promise to be with her always. He often comforted her and gave her good friends and family to encourage her.

April was not alone, but she longed for something else. She wanted someone in her life whom would serve God with her, maker her chicken soup when she was sick, and kiss her goodnight every night until she went to live with Jesus. Her friends and family, though they were great, could not do that for her.

Her heart was full...but not too full..

Then one day, April's life began spinning round and round like an uncontrollable storm. She suddenly had to move to a new city and a new house, though she didn't want to go. She knew God was in control, but what was He doing?

Jeff also moved to the same new city. He was very sad to leave his friends and didn't really want to move. He knew God was in control, but what was He doing?

In the new city, April and Jeff worked together telling people about Jesus. April did not understand Jeff at all. She thought he was annoyed with her most of the time. But, she still thought he was funny and kind of cute.

Jeff did not understand April either. He couldn't understand why one day she was having the best day ever, and the next day she would burst into tears.

But, he also liked that she laughed with him and he thought she was kind of cute.

And their hearts were full...but not too full...

Despite their differences, Jeff and April became good friends. They had lots of fun together and joked around a lot.

They had so much fun together that others would ask them if they liked each other as more than friends. They both laughed at this idea. THAT was not possible...right? Their hearts were already full...

...but not too full...

April began to see Jeff's deep love for God, quiet passion for the Gospel, and his integrity and leadership. She admired him and a strange, new feeling began creeping into her heart. It made her stomach feel funny and her heart beat faster. She found herself wanting to be around Jeff all the time-even when they misunderstood each other (probably because she as a little obsessed with "Pride and Prejudice")

This new feeling scared her. What was it? Did she want it to grow stronger or go away? Wasn't her heart already full?

Jeff began to see April's deep love for God, sensitivity to His Spirit, and compassion for others. She was lots of fun to be around. He admired her and a strange, new feeling began to creep into his heart. "Eh, no big deal-it will go away," he thought. But it didn't.

As the days passed, the feeling in April's heart grew stronger and stronger. Then, one day, while sitting on a train across from Jeff, half-way around the world, she talked to God. She suddenly realized the feeling inside her was love. She loved Jeff! Maybe he was her someone, but she was afraid he did not love her back. What if her heart was doomed? And wasn't her heart already full? Yes. But not too full...

(Side note-Yes, this is the very train ride I wrote about. In fact, this could be the very moment I was pouring my heart out to God in my journal about Jeff-I am still highly amused that someone took a photo at this moment.)

Jeff came to his senses and realized his feeling would not go away. He talked to God about it and made a huge discovery. This was more than a feeling-he loved April! Maybe she was that something else he wanted. But was her heart too full? He decided to take a chance...

So he pursued her.

And she was giddy.

The days passed and Jeff grew to love April more deeply and April grew to love Jeff more deeply (and they began to understand each other!) God told them they should get married because they would serve Him better together than alone.

Jeff thought his heart was already full, but God made it bigger so April could fit. God gave April to Jeff to fill his longing and need.

April also thought her heart was full, but God made it bigger so Jeff could fit. God gave Jeff to April to fill her longing and need.

And their hearts were full...

But not too full...

Happy Valentine's Day!

DIY Valentine's Day Art {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

I created some Valentine's Day art last year, but I didn't love it, so I created some new art this year. That's the beauty of DIY and inexpensive decorating! I am still developing my seasonal decor taste and I realized last year that I don't love too much cutesy in the holidays. I have an eclectic style, but I prefer a more vintage-esque/ rustic but refined spin on holiday norms. Not sure if that makes sense, but it's the best way I can describe my style.

I think I am sticking with these, though, for the next few years (we'll see next year).

I, of course, am inspired by other bloggers. I loved this idea from Mary of Sweet Little Bluebird :

She used jewelry charms to make DIY art. I love using materials beyond paper in art and this mixed my love of paper crafting and jewelry making! So, I decided to do this with one of the pieces and make it my own style:

In case you are wondering, here are the materials I used:

Card Stock-My Mind's Eye "Lost and Found" line-Union Square "Perfect" Damask Print (Hobby Lobby)
Jewelery Wire
Key Charm-Bead Landing (Michael's)
"Be Mine" Charm- Making Memories (Michael's-found in scrapbook section NOT jewelry section)
Heart Charm-The Jewelery Shoppe (Hobby Lobby)

Working that wire to make the charms lay correctly and wrap around the card stock was a challenge, but worth it. This one is probably my favorite.

The other small piece was worked around the metal key embellishment that I had and really wanted to use. I wanted to use a Bible verse about love to remind myself what real love is, since Valentine's Day tends to over romanticize love.

The larger piece is from last year-I liked this one, so I kept it.

I found this beautiful scrapbook paper last year and it reminded me of subway art with a romantic flare, so I layered it on other paper and framed it with ribbon tape.

Here is my art on my Valentine's Day Bookcase. I was going to make a tissue rosette ball this year, but I gave up. It was taking too long and I didn't like how my rosettes looked, so crafting fail for me. Maybe next year!

Rubber Door Mat Wall Art from Salvage Dior

Instead of spending big money on vintage iron wall decor, Kate made a look-alike with rubber mats from the Dollar Store and spray paint. I love how amazing this looks-you can't even tell they are rubber!

Love Where You Live Hoop from Gwenny Penny

There's lots of state love art out there, but Gwen put her own creative spin on it with fabric and embroidery and I love it! She actually made this one as a wedding gift.

Changeable Ruffle Skirt from Sew Fantastic

I am in love with this toddler skirt! As if the cuteness wasn't enough, the top wrap is removable, so it is multiple cute skirts in one!

Scrappy Birthday Card {Find It and Make It Friday!}

Every other Friday is "Find It and Make It Friday," where I post a project I've made with recycled materials and/or materials I already have on hand. No spending allowed!

I recently made this card for my Mom for her birthday. I named it "Scrappy Birthday" because I basically grabbed a bunch of cute paper crafting scraps and embellishments that I had laying around and created a card. This is why I keep piles of little paper and ribbon scraps instead of throwing them away. :-) (The one thing I DON'T purge-it's weird.)

The card measured 6"x4" folded. I'm not going to include a tutorial because you get the picture just by looking at it. I just found some fun scraps, laid them out, and then glued. I love the colors-it's probably one of my favorite cards and I didn't even plan it! Don't you love it when a craft just comes into place? That doesn't always happen.

Valentine's Day Decor {Delightfully Nesting}

I realized recently that I've been overly ambitious in my decorating plans. I wish I had all day to make decorations, but I work full time, have a husband I do not wish to neglect, and a baby that's due in 3 weeks. I have to make time to craft, but I also have been learning to accept that all my ideas will not come into fruition right now-and that's OK.

Plus, let me reiterate, I have a baby coming in 3 weeks. My life is about to turn upside down. Crafting will be a luxury in a few weeks!

I should've seen the light in January when everyone was posting their Valentine's projects and I was thinking, "What? Valentine's? That's like forever..oh two weeks...away."

So, my goal for seasonal decorating this year is adding here and there and when I am able. This may mean my projects won't be timely, so I'll have to wait to show them off until next year. But, that's OK too-it just means I'll have built-in content!

I have managed to add a bit of easy Valentine's Decor...yesterday...a week before Valentine's. Ha! Well, at least I'll leave it up for most of the month. If this baby decides to present herself early, it may be up until May.

Here's what I've added this year. First, my Valentine's Centerpiece:

I didn't really like what I did last year. It was too cutesy Valentiny for a centerpiece. So, this year, I went with a more natural feel with Valentine colors. I already had everything on hand too, so it cost me nothing! I simply mixed elements I've used from other seasons.

I love those fake hydrangea balls-I bought them at Michael's last year and they have made a reappearance this year, so you can still get them.

The smaller pieces are harder to see-I apologize for the blur. They are filled with pink stones, white berries, and mini pinecones. It is still Winter, after all! Or finally Winter here in NC I should say.

Remember my Winter tree with the mini snowflake garland?

Well, I was going to make a similar garland of mini hearts, but knew it would be tedious and I wouldn't have much time before Valentine's actually arrived. So, maybe next year. I found a quick solution with these Styrofoam heart picks I had on hand.

It's perhaps a little cutesier than I prefer, but I like it for this year. Maybe I'll try the garland next year!

I am hoping to get a couple of quick projects done this weekend and will hopefully post them on Monday and Tuesday-just in the nick of time! Then I'll be able to show you my whole "mantle." Right now there's an empty frame on it and it looks sad. (There's also a half-way put together Ikea dresser in the middle of our living room, so there's a glimpse of the state of my nesting at the moment!).

The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznik {Delightfully Bookwormish}

The School Library Journal's Top 100 Children's Novels #52

I went a bit out of order and read The Invention of Hugo Cabret with the intention of seeing the movie based on the book, "Hugo." I never made it to the movie. I will wait for it to come to Redbox!

Title: The Invention of Hugo Cabret

Author: Brian Selznik

Genre: Children's Fiction (Ages 7 and up), Mystery

The Recipe: Orphaned Hugo lives in within the walls of the Paris train station. After his father dies and his uncle disappears, he is left to thieve and maintain his uncle's job to avoid suspicion. Determined to complete his father's last obsession-the repair of a mysterious automaton-Hugo and his new friend Isabella unlock a discovery of secrets that could change Hugo forever.

The Frosting and Sprinkles: The Invention of Hugo Cabret is an exciting and adventurous page-turner. I read it in one sitting because I was dying to know what happens.

The highlight of this novel is the illustrations. The book appears thick, but much of it is Selznik's illustrations and photos, so don't let the 525 pages intimidate you or your child! The story is told with a combination of pictures and words, which creatively add emotion to the characters and story. Isolated, the writing would fall short and the pictures would make no sense, but together they weave a compelling story about a broken boy finding repair.

I love Hugo's character. He is a deep character and easy to which to relate. You can't help liking and sympathizing with him despite the fact that he is a thief. I could take or leave the other characters, though they are needed for the story development. Isabella is incredibly annoying at times, but it shows that Selznik is good at portraying characters well-the fact that a character can affect your feelings shows good writing.

This novel is a very symbolic one, which may be lost on most kids. However, it also has many layers that allow it to be understood and enjoyed at different levels by different ages.

I never found the story boring and the ending is surprising. My 7 year-old niece LOVED it, so it gets a kid's thumbs up!

The Hair That Fell Into the Batter: I have few complaints about The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but I do feel the ending was a little too neatly resolved and wrapped up. The book failed to address and explore Hugo's fear that it was his fault his father died. This is a deep issue and since Selznik brings it up at the beginning, I was disappointed that he just ignored it in the rest of the novel, as it had the potential for great character development. Oh well! There is so much I love about the book that these seem minor!

Resin Flower Jewelry {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

You've probably noticed that resin flower cabochon jewelery is making a come-back, especially on Etsy. I love this trend! It's beautiful, feminine, vintage-looking, and even better-inexpensive to make yourself.

I started noticing pieces on Etsy and considered buying some for my Mom for her birthday. However, I enjoy jewelry-making, especially trying new techniques, so I decided to research the cost of materials. I was surprised by how inexpensive those precious little flowers are, so the decision was simple-I would make some for my Mom myself. It's more special that way, anyway!

I made her a matching necklace and bracelet set, which I designed myself with her style in mind.

I love how it turned out and she likes it too!

Here is how I created it:

Materials

All Silver Materials were purchased at Hobby Lobby. Brand names are in parentheses.

Silver flower bottoms (The Jewelry Shoppe)
Silver link beads (The Jewelery Shoppe)
Pearl Clasp (The Jewelery Shoppe)
Silver Jump Rings (The Jewelery Shoppe)
Silver Chain for Necklace (The Metal Gallery)
Silver Lobster Clasp for necklace (The Metal Gallery)
Resin Chrysanthemum Cabochons (Etsy-Steam Punk and Stones)
Resin Roses (PickYourPlumb)
Hot Glue Gun
Jewelery Pliers

How To:

(I figured this out as I went.)

1. First, I used the hot glue gun to attach the resin flowers to the metal bottoms and let them dry for at least 30 minutes.

2. Next, I arranged the pieces the way I wanted them to look. I linked each piece together with jump rings and pliers. If you do this, be careful to make sure you link each piece in the same direction so that it will not twist when fully together!

3. For the necklace, I but the flowers together first so that I could measure how long I wanted each chain piece to be for the length of the necklace. I then attached each chain piece to the sides with jump rings.

4. Last, I attached the clasps with jump rings.

Historic Savannah {Delightful Adeventures}

Cobble-stone Streets, beautiful houses, sculpted parks shaded by a canopy of Spanish moss, and rich history. These are the aspects that make the Historic District of Savannah, GA one of the premiere tourist destinations of the South.

I had the privileged of visiting Savannah this past November and thoroughly enjoyed it. Here's what you should do while touring historic Savannah.

1. Take a Trolley Tour

The trolley tours are a good way to get an overview of the city and some historical facts and stories behind the famous structures and parks.

There are a ton of options for companies, but we used Oglethorpe Trolley Tours. They seemed to have the best prices (we bought the unlimited hop on/hop off for $15/person) and we were pleased with the tour. It was fun and informative and lasted about 90 minutes. Also, with this price, they would pick us up and drop us off around the city when we called. Savannah also has public transit, but you do have to catch them at allotted spots during certain times.

2. Walk!
Though we took a trolley tour, we also walked through all of historic Savannah. It's really not that taxing (and I was 4 1/2 months pregnant), but it takes almost all day if you want to explore some of the sites. It's set up in blocks, easy to navigate, and is rated one of the best walking cities in the US. In addition, exploring on foot allows you to take better photos and explore different sites.

Here are some highlights of Historic Savannah.

Telfair Academy Museum
Admission-$20 per person or $40 for a family pass
$5 for Students
Children under 5 are free

This quaint museum is the oldest public art museum in the South. It's three stories offer over 4,000 works of art from America and Europe. A few rooms of this former family mansion are decorated to appear as they did in the late 1800s.

Famous Hollywood Spots

Remember the opening scene of Forest Gump, where the feather floats down from the top of a steeple? Well, this is that chapel. The bus stop scene was also filmed here, but the bench was placed especially for the movie, so it is not there. Many movies were filmed in Savannah and you can see most of those spots.

Historic Houses

Savannah is home to several famous historic houses and a rich history that dates back to Colonial 1773. Many famous historical figures called Savannah home, including Eli Whitney, John Wesley, Johnny Mercer, Juliet Gordon Low, and Clarence Thomas.

Spanish Moss

Savannah is known for it's beautiful Spanish Moss, which grows naturally and like crazy in the city!

Historic Places of Worship
Savannah has a number of historic churches and synagogues still in operation, including Christ Church (started by Methodists evangelists John Wesley and George Whitfield), First Bryan Baptist Church (the oldest African American church in America), Temple Mickve Israel (one of the oldest Jewish synagogues in the US), and this church:

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, one of the earliest established Catholic churches in the South. When Savannah was first established, the Catholics were banned from Savannah because England was afraid they would be more loyal to their Spanish enemies, who were also Catholic. The banned lifted shorty after The Revolutionary War began.

The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is open to the public and is a beautiful church to visit.

Low House and Girl Scouts Headquarters

If you were ever a Girl Scout, you know that its founder, Juliet Gordon Low, was from Savannah. Here is where she lived after she married and here is where the very first Girl Scout troop meeting was held. The headquarters is still located behind the house.

Forsyth Park

Savannah boasts several beautiful little square parks, but Forsyth park is the largest and in my opinion, most beautiful. Plus, it has a large grassy field on which to play and a playground for kids.

3. Go By the River

While in Savannah, walking by the river is a must! It's beautiful and there fun little shops to explore.

Valentine Crafts Blasts From the Past {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

I haven't started any Valentine crafts yet, but hopefully this week I will start! I am overwhelmed with baby stuff. So, today I thought I'd bring back some of my best projects from the past-meaning last year because that's when I started posting them on this blog.

10 Things I Love About You Valentine

You can also call this an "alternative scrapbook." I want to thank all who visit for keeping this my number 1 craft project hit on this blog!

Jeff and my anniversary is so close to Christmas that I am really bad at making something creative for him, so I guess I will have to rely on good ole Valentine's Day for that! Last year, I wanted to make him a creative Valentine and I had this fabulous Watchmaker's Case with 10 tins, so I thought it would be fun to make an alternative "scrapbook" of 10 things I love about him.

Each tin has a tiny photo, the reason, and an embellishment. You can click on the link above for details on how I did this and where I bought the Watchmaker's case.

I now want to find a Watchmaker's case with 12 tins and do one for each month of the up and coming Baby Knapp's first year!

No-Sew Bathroom Towels

I made this decorative towels for the bathroom super cheap and with no sewing!

Valentine Tube Treats

I made these last year for the young women I disciple and filled them with Valentine's M&Ms. It was also the first craft I photographed with our Digital SLR and was amazed at the difference. This year's treat will not measure up in cuteness, but I'm 8 and 1/2 months pregnant, so it can't be helped!

Winter Mum Gate Decor {Find It and Make It Friday}

Every other Friday is "Find It and Make It Friday," where I share a craft I made with materials I already have or found. No spending allowed!

I found a cute little mum gate at an antique wharehouse last year and decided to make it into a photo holder, changeable with the seasons and holidays. I decorated it for Fall, but unfortunately never found the time to change it for Christmas. Oh well-maybe next Christmas!

I decorated it for Winter, though, so here it is-my last Winter craft of January (Time to move on to Valentine's day!). I also used stuff I already had on hand.

Adorable Baby Shower Ideas {Festive Delight}

At 35 weeks pregnant, all I have is babies on the mind! I've been doing well except lately I've begun to freak out that my ultra sound was inaccurate and we're going to have a boy, even though they clearly showed the lines of the labia. I'm afraid to take the gifts we've received out of the packages and fear that, since I'm now attached to the idea of having a girl, I will not take such a surprise well. I guess this fear is normal, but I wish it would go away!

In fact, that's why I didn't post this last night. I decided I needed to just go to bed because I was irrationally worrying about it. SO, there's an honest look at the state of heart. :-)

5 Weeks left-well, in a perfect world. :-) I'm thinking I'll take a little break from WIWW for a post-partum-or else you will get tired of seeing the variety of ways I can wear sweatpants and Ts. Or maybe I will have one day a week where I try and I'll post that. We'll see!

My sister and her family gave this to me for Christmas and I couldn't wait to read it, so, again, went off my plan. Wilson's first trilogy, 100 Cupboards, is one of my absolute favorites and the new book did not disappoint!

What I'm Reading Now
Depression: A Stubborn Darkness, Light For the Path by Edward T. Welch
This is taking me FOREVER to read. It's good, but non-fiction doesn't compel me to read as much. I have a few chapters left, so my goal is to finish this before I move on to any fiction! I'm reading this because I've struggled with depression-and probably will on and off my entire life (though I am in a period of peace now). I like it because it addresses the many aspects of depression-physical, chemical, spiritual, experiential, etc.

Mini Snowflake Tree {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

I am still not done with Winter! I recently made this little "tree" with twigs I collected last Spring. Yep, last Spring. I needed to do something with them because I'm sure my husband was wondering why I was keeping a bunch of twigs in the corner.

I really wanted a white base because the bookshelf on whichI planned to put it is black. I found a cute little bronzed planter at Michael's, so I decided to get it and paint it antique white with acrylic paint. I liked the etchings on it, so I sanded those areas down, so the etchings would show through. Then, I sealed it. I love how it turned out!

After the base, I put the tree and garland together. Here's How I did It:

Materials:

Planter: (Michael's)
Acrylic Paint-Antique White from Folk Art
Floral Foam (I got mine at the Dollar Tree)
Twigs
Twine String
Mini Snowflake Punch
Paper in various blues
small piece of linen

How To:

1. After I the base dried, I put the floral foam inside-it was curved, so it fit perfectly. I then arranged the branches by sticking them into the foam. I covered it with a piece of linen to hide the foam.

2. For the garland, I punched out snowflakes from various blue colored paper and glued them to the string. When it dried, I hung it on the branches.

Here it is on my Winter bookshelf.

This cute little Winter decoration cost me about $10 because I had most of the materials on hand. I had to buy the planter, punch, and foam.

Delights of the Week: Valentine's Cuteness and More!

There is a lot of Valentine Cuteness going on in the blogsphere right now, so this week's Delights is a bit Valentine heavy.

I've always loved Valentine's Day because my parents made it fun for me and my sister growing up. They always gave us a little treat gift. It was extra special because my Dad usually picked out something especially for us. It made me feel known and loved by my Dad and in later years I never felt that Valentine's Day was all about having a boyfriend (or not having one, which is how I spent the majority of mine until Jeff! :-)) Because of that, I always made it a point to have fun on Valentine's Day sans significant other. And yes, as weird as it is, Jeff is the only guy I've seriously dated-and not until the age of 27. But, I will tell that story later! And thanks Mom and Dad for loving me well!

OK, onto the Delights!

Flower Heart Wreaths from Bliss Bloom Blog

These lovely wreaths by Mel are my kind of Valentine's Decor. As she amusingly puts it, she wasn't ready for her house to "look like cupid's lair." I share her sentiments! I like the cutesy Valentine's stuff, but it's usually not my personal style.

Infant Peasant Dress from Sew Much Ado

So precious! Of course, their pattern (free on their blog) can be used for anytime of year. With less than two months until my little girl arrives, I can't get enough of baby girl cuteness. I really want to try it, but I'm a pre-beginner sewer and the elastic scares me.

Faux Friday: Shabby Apple Simply Alice Knock Off

Every other week is "Faux Friday" where I post a Knock-off project I or someone else has made.

I started "Faux Friday" almost a year ago and I've loved doing it because it challenges me to try new crafting techniques I would never normally try. Unfortunately, I think I'm going to have to slow down on the knock off projects due to costs and the fact that I'm going to pop out a human in less than two months.

But, don't worry, Faux Friday is not disappearing! I am either going to try to feature more knock offs from other bloggers and keep it at every other week OR move it to once a month, but it will not disappear entirely.

Now, onto today's Knock Off. I saw the "Simply Alice" bracelet on Shabby Apple and knew this had to be my next project. I already had a pink freshwater pearl bracelet that broke, so I figured this would be a great way to revitalize it.

This Shabby Apple's version, sold for $55

Mine was essentially free, since I already had the materials, BUT it probably would've cost me about $5 to make. This is mostly due to the fact that I got the pearls in China where they are super cheap.So, I saved $50!

My version:

The Shabby Apple one is one strand, but my old bracelet was a three-strand and I actually liked the way it looked and was laid out, so I first re-created that bracelet. So, instead of having a claw clasp like the SA one, mine just wraps around my wrist.

I made the bracelet by stringing the beads on jewelry wire (I think mine is 20-guage) and shaping it to circle around my wrist naturally. That's how my old bracelet was originally made before the ends started giving out. I'm not sure what the originally maker did, but I shot some glue inside the end pearls to secure them on the ends of the wire.

Then, I simply tied a black satin bow on the backside of one strand (so that it would not hinder me from wrapping the bracelet around my wrist).

I like how it looks laying there on a table. :-) The verdict is still out about how I feel about it on my wrist.

The bow is a cute idea, but I'm not sure I love it. It reminds me of a tux. I think that's supposed to be the affect, though-like the Rabbit's bow tie from Alice in Wonderland. It's growing on me, though.

City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau {Delightfully Bookwormish}

The School Library Journal's Top 100 Children's Novels #77

Title: The City of Ember (Books of Ember #1)

Author: Jeanne DuPrau

Genre: Children's Fiction (ages 10 and up); Fantasy; Futuristic

The Recipe: (from Goodreads) The city of Ember was built as a last refuge for the human race. Two hundred years later, the great lamps that light the city are beginning to flicker. When Lina finds part of an ancient message, she’s sure it holds a secret that will save the city. She and her friend Doon must decipher the message before the lights go out on Ember forever.

The Frosting and Sprinkles: Overall, I enjoyed reading The City of Ember. Despite some flaws, it is a good story and I found it intriguing and exciting. It didn't take me long to read it because I wanted to know how it ends.

The book focuses on two middle schoolers, Lina and Doon-they are very unique from each other, but both likeable characters. They are courageous children, but their flaws are also evident, making them relateable and interesting.

DuPrau addresses the ideas/themes of dystopia, the dangers of group-think, and political and human corruption on a middle grade age-appropriate level.

The ending was open-ended and not quite resolved, but filled with hope. I still enjoyed it and then found out there are actually 3 more books, so I look forward to reading those at some point int he future.

The Hair That Fell Into the Batter: The City of Ember has a few flaws, but they did not hinder my enjoyment of the story. There are some loose ends that leave the reader having to suspend their belief a little more than fantasy and futuristic novels usually require-mostly because they are questions of logic.

For example, why is no one trained in how to fix the generator? If the Builders of the city were so smart, why did they not train people on specifics instead of giving them vague directions to blindly follow? I mean, what if the generator just broke before their planned 200 years of it working? Also, why did they leave the biggest key to survival of the human race in the hands of politicians? They were escaping an Apocalypse-they certainly would've have known politicians can't be trusted! And, finally, it's hard to believe that not one of the people chosen to go down to the city and raise babies ever told "their children" about their lives before Ember. It's the nature of humans-we can't keep our mouths shut.

Despite these examples, I still enjoyed the story and was able to ignore them for the time.

Winter Centerpiece {Delightfully Nesting}

I recycled my snowy pine cones from my Christmas centerpiece and added light blue yarn balls that I made. I like the mix of cozy and cold.

In the smaller holders, I used mini pine cones, blue stones, and white berries, all of which I had on hand.

I've almost done an entire year of this centerpiece, so I'll show them all in one post soon. I wasn't particularly crazy of my Valentine's one last year, so I'm waiting until I create a new one for this year!

What I Wore Wednesday: 34 Weeks Pregnant

It's time for another week of What I Wore Wednesday with Lyndsay from The Pleated Poppy!

I went a little scarf crazy last week because it was actually cold enough to wear scarves!! Yea!! So, here I am at 34 Weeks Pregnant.

WEDNESDAY

It was an overcast day, so my pics are a little blurry. :-(

Here's two pictures, so you can see my hat, though it is blurry. It's been a while since I wore a hat (because it is has been hot this Winter), so I was itching to wear one!

Dress- Forever 21 a long time ago (not maternity-I'm probably ruining it :-))

Leggings-Target (not maternity-I didn't buy any maternity leggings because they are ridiculously over priced. I just bought leggings a size or two bigger than my normal size and it worked!)

Boots-Target-I love these and am so glad I can still prop my leg up and zip them up!

I did a little color play today and tried aqua with navy and grey-I liked it.

Grey T-shirt: I think it's from Charlotte Russe-it's one of the non-maternity things I can get away with wearing. Plus, it was covered up, so if it rode up a little, no one could tell!

Winter Berry Wreath {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

I'm still adding some Winter touches to our decorations. I made this simple little wreath to hang over our bookshelf.

It was really easy to make. I just used five white berry sticks that I bought at Hobby Lobby. I twisted them together and into a circle and then tied a blue bow on top. Easy Breezy, but a fun little Winter touch! AND it cost under $5.

Comments Now Under Moderation-Stupid Spammers!

So, someone decided to have a field day with my blog today and post about 30 spam comments on various posts. I have never had this problem before and I really like the ease of people being able to comment without approval, but unfortunately some moron trying to get us to visit a stupid website has made this convenience impossible for the time being. :-(

I do hate word verification, so I will not impose that on you. :-) But, I have now set my comments to be approved by me before being posted-it is much easier to deny approval then to go back and delete 30 spam comments!

Maybe I will able to switch it off after some time. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks for reading and for your sweet comments!

Normally, I every other week I do, "Faux Friday," where I post a knock off project I've made or feature someone else's . I am postponing it until next Friday. :-( I apologize-it's been a tiring day and I haven't been able to finish it. So, look for it next Friday!

Honey Glazed Broiled Salmon {Delightful Morsel}

This is a yummy, quick, and easy way to make Salmon (which is good for you too!)

Total Time: 15 Minutes

Ingredients:

1-1 1/4 pound piece skinless salmon fillet, cut into 4 pieces (I usually buy it fresh and skin it myself, but you can have the butcher do it for you)
1 tblsp honey
1 tsp. low sodium soy sauce
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

Directions:

1. Heat broiler. While heating, combine honey and soy sauce.

2. Place salmon on a foil-lined broiler-proof baking sheet (or broiler pan) ans season with salt and pepper. Broil for 5 minutes.

3. remove salmon from broiler and spoon honey mixture over the salmon. Broil until salmon is opaque throughout, about 2 to 5 more minutes.

Recommended Pairings:

Sauteed Collard Greens

Garlicky Green Beans

Birds Eye Steamfresh Multigrain Blend with Spinach, Tomato and Onions (found in freezer section)

What I Wore Wednesday: 33 Weeks Pregnant!

I've slacked off on taking photos of my outfits and have not participated in WIWW in the past few weeks, but I am back!

For those who began following me recently, I try to participate in WIWW with The Pleated Poppy every week, in addition to my regular post. It's a fun way to challenge my creativity in dressing-and to step outside the box.

But, this week is not a good example. Haha. I've been lazy and since I've been working from home, I am afraid the frump took over. There were a couple of days I didn't even get out of my pajamas. I'm going to just say I was preparing for my first few weeks of being a new mom. :-)

Nah, I was just being lazy, but I did manage to take 3 pictures. Here I am at 33 weeks pregnant!

Princess & the Pea Party {Festive Delight}

Last year, Jodi from Paintchips & Cupcakes threw an adorable Princess and the Pea themed party for her daughter. This fabulous DIY party also included pajamas and pancakes, of course! I love this party so much, I asked Jodi if I could feature it.

Check out some of her adorable decorations:

I am gushing over this table setting! Jodi sewed the table cloth herself and made it to look like stacked mattresses. I love how the whole table looks like a bed!

Cute fabric banner! Love the colors-they are very close to the ones I am using for my baby's nursery, so of course, I love them.

Jodi also made a cute little themed PJ top for the birthday girl.

For activities, the guests decorated crowns, wands, and castles.

They also did face painting and pained their nails.

And of course, what is a party without cupcakes?! They are essential, even after downing some pancakes!

Jodi made these adorable favor bags too!

I love everything about this party. Um, is 31 too old to have a Princess and the Pea Party? I am not sure I can wait four more years for all this cuteness. Thankfully, I'm having a girl! Of course, she'll probably be a tomboy and want a a dirt party or something. :-)

DIY Winter Art {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

All my Christmas decorations are down, so I've been trying to place touches of Winter around our apartment. I like to put up some non-Christmas Winter decorations before I jump into Valentine's Day. Hearts and flowers just seem out of place to me in January.

Despite the fact that it's 60 degrees and sunny outside, I'm pretending we live in a Winter Wonderland with my DIY art for Winter.

Because there isn't much time between New Year's and Valentine's, I went simple. Fir the larger piece, I used a free printable from Stay At Home Artist. I embellished the snowflakes with some pearl embellishments I already hand, so it was practically free!

For the black frame, I was really lazy and just pasted a snowy pine cone embellishment from Jolee's Boutique onto blue scrapbook paper.

For the silver frame, I cut out a snowflake embellishment from The Paper Studio and added pearl embellishments that I had on hand.

And that is my DIY art for Winter. I've now done a whole year's worth of DIY art, so I will have to show them all together soon.

NC Love Art {Find It and Make It Friday}

State love art is super trendy right now! You will see them all over blogland and with different variety. I think they are cute, but never had a reason to make one until recently. My friend who was studying here from South Korea recently went back to her country, so I thought a little state art love would be a perfect addition to her goodbye gift. Here is what I made for her:

I put the heart over the city where I live and where she studied with a stamp.

Super simple-I just found a frame and some cute scrapbook paper and made a simple, cute, handmade gift.

Phi Phi Island, Thailiand (Delightful Adventures)

Phi Phi Island (yes, it's pronounced "pee" "pee") is a place that postcards can only dream of capturing. Sunny and beautiful year-round, it is a great vacation spot-especially if you are a college student studying abroad in China, which I was in the Winter of 2004.

In China, the big holiday is Lunar New Year, which occurs in January or February, according to the Lunar Calendar. So, their big break from school is not summer, but January and February. My friends and I took this opportunity to visit Thailand where we we spent a few days on Phi Phi Island in perfect 80 degree weather.

I wish I could offer you details about where we stayed and where we ate, but I was not much of a documenter on that trip! I needed to relax, so I did. Also, nearly ever infrastructure on Phi Phi was sadly destroyed less than a year later during the Tsunami of 2004. So, I am not sure how much of the smaller places were re-built.I believe nearly all of the resorts have been re-built.

I can, however, tell you that it is a great, super affordable vacation, if you're already nearby. Once you get to Phi Phi, everything is inexpensive, but the plane ticket is what costs the most.

Here are some of the highlights from my trip.

I did lots of relaxing by the pool and on the beach, gazing at this breath-taking view:

Just to warn the Americans, Phi Phi is a big vacation spots for Europeans who like to sun bathe topless and Asian (and European) men who love to wear really tight speedos. It may be a culture shock.

I also had fun doing outdoor activities, such as kayaking. I reccomend taking a trip on over to Monkey Beach where you might just get to this:

Feed wild monkeys!!!

Then, I can live vicariously through you because I sadly did not get a chance to do this. But, it's OK, I was able to play with monkeys at other times in my life.

I also went hiking and saw beautiful views of the cliffs.

I ate lots of fresh, yummy seafood.

And met B-list celebrities staying at the same resort!

For those of you who are not of the "My So Called Life" generation, that is Jared Leto, now most famous for dating Lindsay Lohan and starting a band called 30 Seconds to Mars, of whose songs I can't name one. He was in Thailand filming the movie "Alexander" which I never saw. That's probably why I am laughing awkwardly in this photo-because I'm not really a fan...or maybe it was the weird conversation he had with us in which he told us he knew we were Christians because we had "an aura of innocent light" around us. Mmmhmm.

George had fun on vacation too, in his natural habitat. I mean, I assume such trees are also found in Africa. He was also disappointed about missing Monkey Beach, though I am pretty sure he think those monkeys are a bit primitive. He lives in a swanky apartment in Manhattan, after all.

"Johnny Tremain" by Esther Forbes {Delightfully Bookwormish}

The School Library Journal's Top 100 Children's Novels #78

Title: Johnny Tremain

Author: Esther Forbes

Genre: Children's Fiction, Historical Fiction

The Recipe: (from Goodreads) Johnny Tremain, a young apprentice silversmith, is caught up in the danger and excitement of 1775 Boston, just before the Revolutionary War. But even more gripping than living through the drama of Revolutionary Boston is the important discovery Johnny makes in his own life.

The Frosting and Sprinkles: The main characters, especially Johnny are likeable. Though he is very arrogant and prideful, you can't help but sympathize and like Johnny.

The idea of the book is interesting and unlike some "historical" fictions, Forbes actually did her research on the Revolutionary War.

The Hair That Fell Into the Batter: BUT, the book is fairly boring and the plot thins out in the middle and becomes uninteresting again until the end. But, then the end is not very good either. There are touching moments, but for the most part, it just ends and leaves a lot unanswered and not in a good way that makes you contemplate.

Out of curiosity, I checked out some of the reviews of this book on GoodReads (after I wrote me own). It seems that adults appreciate this book, but kids hate it. So, I'm guessing you can skip this one for your kids.

Lace Cuff Bracelet {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

2012 is here! I'm excited about what this year will have in store here at Cup of Delight. This year I will become a mom for the first time, so things might slow down around March-hopefully you;ll stick with me as I figure out life. I tend to be a little too ambitious...especially about how many craft project I want to do.

Onto today's craft-I saw this lovely lace cuff bracelet on U-Create Crafts from I {Heart} Naptime. Here is mine made with green satin:

So pretty! It's inexpensive too, as the materials will make several bracelets. I made this one as a gift, but I'm thinking I will have to make one for myself!

I used Jamielyn's tutorial at U Create, which is fantastic, so there's no need for me to re-create it. I do, however have a couple of tips that I learned in the process:

1. I couldn't find elastic lace that was as wide as hers, so I bought a double-layered elastic lace and pulled the sides to separate. The top layer will be skinnier, but it still looks great-and it easily stays apart when you add all the embellishments.

2. The flowers petals do not have to be perfect-it all comes together once you glue it together.

Mini Paper Wreath {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

I made this inexpensive mini wreath to go over my bookshelf for Christmas.

Nothing fancy, but I think it's cute and whimsical-AND it was super cheap. I had all the materials on hand.

Here's How I did It-

Materials:

6" Embroidery Hoop (You can use any ring form, or make your own, but I had the hoop on hand)
Card Stock (I used My Mind's Eye Countdown to Christmas)
Circle punches-2.5 inch, 1.5 inch, and 1 inch
Craft Glue (I use Elmer's Tacky Craft Glue)
Ribbon
Miniature Christmas ornaments

How To:

I simply punched out the circles in various sizes and glued them onto the ring form, leaving space to tie ribbon on the bottom and top. I laid out all the circles before gluing, so I would know how I wanted it to look. After letting the circles dry, I tied on the top hanging ribbon and the bottom ornaments.

My Christmas Decor {Delightfully Nesting}

We live in a tiny apartment, so a full-size tree is out of the question for now. We put up this little guy filled with my husband's NC State ornaments and mementos from our travels together.

My Mini Tree

Here's the tree that started it all! My mini tree I got when I was 9 years old. It came from Hallmark and I have a collection of Hallmark miniature ornaments from years past. I added the random display next to it with some stuff I had on hand. My mom gave me the little nutcracker.

The Big Bookshelf

Please forgive how messy and crowded this is! I have not mastered this shelf and our many books yet-and by mastered I mean make them pleasing to the eye.

I will address the menorah and driedle first (and the irony of them placed below the "Christian Life" label :-)) So, long story short, when I was a little girl I really wanted to be Jewish. I still am a lover of Jewish people and culture. But, when I was a girl I was a little weird about it. I convinced my mom to buy me a driedle (with my limited understanding of Jewish holidays) and tried to get my friends to play with me. In my adult life, my friends like to encourage my interest, so they like to gift me with Jewish things like this menorah and driedle-and Passover plates and random t-shirts.

I'm a Christian by faith and though I really wish I would find out I was culturally Jewish, it probably won't happen. Ain't no harm-my Saviour is Jewish and the Old Testament is still important to my faith, so celebrating Jewish holidays is not so weird. But, you should know, Hanakkuh is actually a minor Jewish holiday.

As for the other decor-I made the "JOY" for our Christmas card this year, so I slapped it up there with that little tree I found at Target. Thought it was cute and it reminded me of Charlie Brown.

Vintage Spool Christmas Tree {Monday's Cup of Creativity}

A friend from church recently gave me a treasure drove-a bag full of vintage wooden spools that her Mom and Grandma never threw out! I decided to make a little Christmas tree with some of them and it's probably my favorite Christmas craft I've done this year.

It was free to me because I had all the materials on hand!

If you want to make one of your own, but have no vintage spools-no worries! You can create a similar look by buying wooden spools at a craft store (usually in the wood section) and distressing them with distress ink to get an aged look.

Here's How I Made It:

Materials:

20 Wooden Spools (This makes tree that is about 7" tall)-I used a larger one for the trunk
Scrap ribbon and lace
hot glue gun

To make the tree, I first wrapped the pieces of ribbon and lace around each spool, hot gluing the ends. Then I made each row by hot gluing the ends of the spools together. Then, I assembled the whole tree, hot gluing one row on top of the other. When the rows dried, I then glued on the trunk and the top bow. I let it dry flat and stood it up only when dry, so it wouldn't collapse.

I'll show you all of my decor tomorrow or Wed. (I may not post tomorrow because it's my and Jeff's 2-year anniversary today!)-I didn't get around to doing some of the stuff I planned, but that's OK. The past couple of months have been so hectic for us and I am still trying to finish some Christmas gifts. Genius here decided to try to make her niece some matching PJS with her AG doll-never having taken a sewing class in my life. I conquered the doll ones-but the 7-year old ones terrify me a little!
